This book provides information about patient and family education as it applies to patients with serious mental illness. It includes background information on theory, philosophy, and methods for psychiatric patient and family education; specific outlines for presenting content information; and practical guides for application of the method in a variety of settings. All written materials needed for conducting modules on the outlined topics are provided.

The manual is based on the philosophy that patients and families have a right to know as much as they want to know and can learn about these illnesses, and that the more they know the better they cope with the illness on a short- and long-term basis. An informed patient and family are more likely to make wiser treatment decisions, leading to improved success of the prescribed treatment.

The purposes of this manual are:
1. To provide an overall philosophy and framework for providing educational services for persons with serious mental illness and their families, giving a common language and viewpoint about the illness and its management.
2. To give a structured, organized guide to program development for those who wish to establish a program "by the book."
3. To provide a set of principles of patient and family education that can be used in a variety of settings for those who wish to use these principles within the contest of various treatment techniques.

Part I of this manual provides historical and theoretical background information that can give the reader an understanding of the context and basis for development of psychiatric patient and family education and information about methodoligical considerations, clinical concerns, and implementation issues. Part II provides specific class content outlines for patient education. Part III includes class outlines for family education, and Part IV consists of appendices providing sample evaluation instruments, administrative forms, suggested media, and recommended readings.

Part II contains 15 separate classes or modules for use in teaching psychiatric patients. In Part III there are 12 classes for use in teaching families. Either set of these classes may be used consecutively and in their entirety in an organized structured program. Alternatively, the content may be intergrated into existing services, or reordered and reorganized for use in the format most approriate for participants and settings involved.

Each class is a self-contained unit, and everthing is provided or suggested for each module including a class plan, instructor's notes, handout materials, evaluation instruments, homework assignments, and sample overhead transparencies, slides, or flip charts.
